The 2024 Republican National Convention resembled a well-orchestrated circus, with Trump as the ringmaster and head clown. The biggest elephant in the room was the notable absence of the traditional Republican Party, which has succumbed to Trump’s dominance. This highlights a significant shift within the party. Figures like Tucker Carlson, Hulk Hogan, and Kid contributed to the circus-like atmosphere. Their roles served to reinforce Trump’s control and the absurdity of the event. Kid Rock’s rant with the lyrics “Fight, Fight” shows how rapidly the imagery of the attempted assignation is being used as propaganda.
The event combined the excitement and spectacle of a circus with the fervor and intensity of a political rally, created a unique and charged atmosphere. Evoked were images of a gladiator spectacle in the Coliseum, with Trump as the emperor overseeing the proceedings. This was subtly if unconsciously done by cameras shifting back to his box. The chants of "Trump…Trump" and "U.S.A…U.S.A" recalled rallies of dictators who claimed to embody “the will of the people.” This fervor suggests a cult-like devotion among his supporters, reminiscent of historical authoritarian leaders.
Trump’s lengthy, hour-long speech, in which he promised to change everything in one day, positioned him as a messianic figure. He presented himself as the sole savior capable of providing miraculous solutions to America’s challenges, appealing to those seeking quick and decisive action.
The incident of the attempted assassination, framed as an act of God that the bullet missed him, further elevated Trump’s status among his followers. This narrative of divine protection and destiny bolstered his image as an untouchable and divinely endorsed leader.
While watching the event, I felt both repulsed and momentarily drawn into the illusion that Trump could eradicate America’s ills. This reflects the seductive nature of populist rhetoric and the danger it poses to democratic norms. The “facts” presented by Trump and others at the Convention were false or partly true as documented by Politifact.org. The problems and the solutions are absolute propaganda to excite the masses to be drawn toward Trump and the far-right Republican agenda, as detailed in Project 2025.
In the light of day, the event appeared as a prelude to the creation of an authoritarian state. This realization underscores the critical nature of the current political moment and the potential erosion of democratic institutions and values.
